The Leafs never had a real shot at Shattenkirk, even at the price Tampa Bay got him for, the Leafs couldn't afford it.

I guess it depends on how you define "interest in" or "had a shot at". I feel like he is just a flashy name anyway. So let me be the first to say enjoy your time in TB Shatty!

Wasn't Phaneuf already a leaf when he was less worse and older in his career, or is this a mistake that needs repeating?

Who the (frank) is going to take Ceci at 4.5 million?

He's one of the few defensemen bad enough to be worth Zaitsev and somebody is going to take Ceci?

Maybe if he had a signing bonus that was already paid and a cap floor team wanted him to eat up cap space but cost very little real dollars but that didn't happen.

Finally, somebody with the right answer.

Problem was, he had his QO he could sign, which was cheaper than the deal they gave him.

Which begs the question, why didn't they give him as much money as possible up front so they had the option to trade him to a budget team at the cap floor?

Ceci at 4.5 would definitely be a tricky sell. But maybe the Leafs could retain 2mil or something? Ceci at 2.5 is at least a tad more attractive. Then the addition of Shatty at 1.75 is still a savings. Not sure I would bother but that is at least one possible scenario.

Retaining salary on a bad player to sign another bad player, not a fan of that at all.

Ceci can be bought out for $750K cap hit this year and next, he chose Tampa, no big deal. Leafs obviously think that he can be fixed the same way Astros thought they could fix Sanchez.

That is what I thought that they'd do. But the way I think it went was, now Babs can't say crap to Dubas about him not giving the lefty/righty sitch that he complained so much about. Ceci is a warm body to fill time until the Dermott gets healthy. Plus if Ceci somehow ends up looking anywhere close to a reasonable NHL d-man on a talented Leafs team then Dubas can flip him mid-season for any asset at all. And with all the league minimum contracts Dubas has, at absolute worst he can even afford to just bury Ceci in the minors. I know that you can only bury. a mill or whatever it is. But then you bring up Lillybust or whoever & save a couple hundred thousand.

This is how I thought it went down too.

Babs complained about lack of depth. Fixed

Babs wants left on left side and righty on right side. Fixed

No more complaints or excuses.

Well that is why I said that I wouldn't bother with it personally. But it is one option whether you're a fan of it or not.

Better than Anderson?
- Barb34

In my opinion, yeah. There’s an argument there though. I think Gibson is phenomenal and his team is just trash. He had the highest GSAA (18.66) of any goalie that played over 2,000 minutes. For reference, Andersen also had a VERY good 9.88, which clocks in at 5th. Pretty wild that the gap is that wide between 1st and 5th.

There are only 2 buyout periods. First one starts a certain time after the cup final is over. 2nd one only opens if you have an arb case.

I thought there were windows when you could buy a player out and times where you couldn’t. I was reading about the Rangers and how there was some confusion as to when their buyout window opened to buy out Shatts. Oddly enough, I thought there window opened because of either a signing or roster move or something. I don’t know for certain though.
